Malware Is the Category — Not the Threat Itself
Malware is an umbrella term — short for "malicious software" — that covers every type of harmful program designed to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to your computer. When someone says their PC "has malware," that's like saying their car "has a problem." It tells you something is wrong, but not what kind of problem or how serious it is.
Viruses, spyware, ransomware, worms, and trojans are all forms of malware. The differences between them come down to how they spread, what they do once inside your system, and what the attacker wants to achieve. Treating them as interchangeable makes it harder to respond effectively.

Viruses, Worms, and Trojans: How Malware Gets In and Spreads
These three types are the most commonly confused, and each spreads differently:
- Virus: Attaches to a legitimate file — a document, executable, or program. It only activates when you open that file. Once running, it copies itself into other files on your system. Viruses require user action to spread, which is why email attachments and downloaded files are common vectors.
- Worm: Unlike a virus, a worm is self-contained. It doesn't need to attach to a file; it replicates itself and travels across networks autonomously. Worms can infect hundreds of machines quickly without any user clicking anything.
- Trojan: Named after the Greek myth, a trojan disguises itself as useful or harmless software — a free game, a utility tool, or even a fake security program. You install it voluntarily. Once running, it may open a backdoor for attackers, download additional malware, or begin stealing data. Trojans do not self-replicate.
"Virus" Is Not a Catch-All Term
Most people use "virus" to describe any computer threat, but that's technically inaccurate. A virus is one specific type of malware. Using the terms interchangeably can create confusion about how a threat works and what steps are actually needed to address it. Understanding the distinction helps you have more informed conversations with tech support and make better decisions about protection.

Spyware, Adware, and Ransomware: What Attackers Actually Want
Once malware is on your machine, its behavior is shaped by the attacker's goal. These three types reflect the most common objectives:
- Spyware operates silently in the background. It may log your keystrokes to capture passwords, monitor the sites you visit, or harvest personal information like banking credentials. You likely won't notice it directly — the warning signs are usually indirect, like slower performance or unexpected network activity.
- Adware is less stealthy. Its goal is to generate advertising revenue, so it floods your browser with pop-ups, redirects search results, or inserts ads into pages. Some adware also tracks browsing behavior, making it a privacy concern as well as an annoyance.
- Ransomware is the most disruptive. It encrypts your files — photos, documents, work files — and displays a message demanding payment to restore access. Even if payment is made, there is no guarantee files will be returned. Regular backups stored offline or in a separate cloud account are the most reliable defense.
